Is Steve King A Conscientious Objector In The War On Christmas?
Steve King has signed on as a co-sponsor of HR 951 which proclaims that “the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected for use by those who celebrate Christmas.” However, this bill does not take account of whether those who do not celebrate Christmas have a right to invoke the symbols and traditions of the holiday. In fact, there is a War on Christmas being waged right now in Israel where an organization of rabbis is boycotting an restaurant that puts up Christmas trees, a nativity scene, mistletoe or any other of what they term “the foolish symbols of Christianity.”
Does Steve King believe that the Spirit of Christmas is universal? If so, why does he seem so narrow-minded in believing that protection should only be afforded for “the use of these symbols and traditions by those who celebrate Christmas.” After all, the greatest Christmas song of all was written by a Jew. If there is a real War on Christmas, Steve King seems to think he can pick what fronts to fight it on, which doesn’t seem to be the way he thinks other wars should be fought. One would hope Steve King could muster the moral courage to fight until victory in this war too. Otherwise, it would almost be enough to make one believe that Steve King isn’t being sincere at all and that this is all political posturing.
