Slow News Day Roundup

Drew does a nice job of explaining why dragging Mike Mauro into CIETC is silly and why Yepson stanks.

The Register goes over Ed Fallon’s latest ads. They have some cute ideas, but I’m not sure cute is what one looks for in a successful gubernatorial tv ad. Also, why are they only running on cable tv? That seems a little anti-Fallon to me.

The Quad-City Times reports on fifth-graders learning about death the hard way: “Feathery down flew as the hawk scarfed down the first duckling and supplemented its feast with two more.”

There’s some good news at least. 81% of this year’s corn is in the ground. (How on earth do they know that?)

    Cable isn’t anti-Fallon, expensive is anti-Fallon.

I kinda liked the ads; it is good that someone is doing an atypical spot.

As an Iowan, I have seen so many slow-walking-in-a-field-while-delivering-a-monologue ads, that I’ll watch these at least all the way through once.

Atypical good. Lack of substance bad. They should have made the cute part the get your attention opener and then done a little monologue. When Ed came to Grinnell he elaborated on how the money issue effects every other issue-healthcare, environment, etc. He can’t just say “I’m not for sale” and expect folks to get it. Besides, his monologue isn’t your run of the mill monologue anyway.

Does the one with subtitles w/ him mouthing the words even make sense? Isn’t his whole thing that he’s the only one with a voice left?

Also, lots of people (the kind of people who would probably be interested in Fallon) don’t have cable precisely because it is expensive.

When my roommate’s boyfriend saw the ad, he exclaimed “Iowa doesn’t want that hat!” But I won’t go there.

As Lee alluded to, the cable buys for Fallon, while impressive, are simply required for his campaign because it costs soooo much more to run ads during the local news and on the basic channels. Advertising on cable is much cheaper, not to mention it reaches some people who don’t normally see the ads and who might be more impacted by the cutesy ads than folks who watch the local news.

Just saying it’s a 2-way street. I’ve never had cable in my life, and plenty of candidates run ads. It’d be a shame to miss out.

100% agree about the hat. Seriously.
