Vilsack in DC

Despite his claim to be focused on his duties as governor, the Register reports that Vilsack travelled to DC this week to court a union conference. Jane Norman writes that Vilsack’s overtures are important to any future presidential bid:

[Vilsack’s] relations with some Iowa trade unions have at times been strained. Vilsack has been the target of criticism by labor groups because of pro-business legislation he has signed in order to compromise with Statehouse Republicans.

During his I’m-not-running-for-anything-I’m-just-here-to-chat speech he also uttered the words Democratic hopefuls are starting to rally around:

The strongest applause came when he called for less reliance on foreign oil and vowed that “we should never, ever send any young man or woman anywhere in the world to defend our oil supply.”

You just keep telling yourself we believe you haven’t thought about it, Tom.

Is it just me or is 2008 shaping up to be another lackluster lineup of Democratic candidates? We’ve got Hillary Clinton, striving for mediocrity in the middle, who can’t win because she is a woman and the Republicans hate her with a firey passion, Feingold (maybe?) who can’t win because he is ‘too liberal’ and Jewish, which unfortunately is probably a disqualifying characteristic just as much as womanhood, and Tom Vilsack, whom on one has heard of, nor could anyone get excited about if they had heard of him. Who else?

Curious — why repeat GOP attacks on your Governor? Is he that bad?

PS — if anything disqualifies Feingold in the eyes of the CW it is not his Jewish hertiage it is singlehood — and a second divorce.

I think there are more serious criticisms of Vilsack, but I was simply pointing out that his biggest liabilities are being unrecognizable and being kind of boring. I wouldn’t call it an attack. I’m just disappointed in Democrats in general for not being able to produce better candidates.
